Mapping a family tree

A family tree shows the ancestors and descendents of a family. It is called a tree because it looks like one with a lot of branches. Each node in such a tree would be an individual in that family. We can thus trace our past using such a representation.
Family trees are commonly used in Biology to show how various organisms have evolved from their ancestors. When such a tree is created for all the organisms it is called as Tree of Life. Shown below is a Tree map showing evolution of humans.

In this activity we will create such family tree. You can go about this in two ways:
  • Create your family tree for your own family
  • Create a family tree for some historic, significant family
You will need to ask your parents, grandparents about your ancestors and their names. Go back as much as possible in terms of generations. Then you can find out about the children and brothers and sisters each one of them had. This way you can find all of your relatives. The mindmap that you will create from this information will help you visualise how big your family is!
Make a plan for getting all the information that you need to do this and get going. You can choose to have different colors for female and male members of the family.

For the other way, you will need to go through your history books for this information. Make a chart and find out the years and the descendents. Finally you can start with the first known individual of that family.
