We will use the application Freeplane to create our mindmaps. The application has an icon of a Honeybee as shown below. The help pages will show you how to create and format mindmaps.

When you open Freeplane you get a default root node named New Mindmap which you can edit. This can be done by double clicking on the root node.

Once you have renamed to root node, you can create the child nodes on the Level 1. This can be done by pressing the Insert button on your key board (Find out where this button is!).

To create more nodes on Level 1 simply press Enter button and you will get another node at that Level.

To create child nodes at Level 2, first select any node of Level 1 by clicking on it. Then press Insert button again. This will create child nodes at Level 2.

The mindmap files are saved with a .mm extension. To save the file press Control+S or go to File> Save.

The mindmaps can be exported to various other image formats like jpg, png, svg and pdf. So this means you can insert a mindmap in an Inkscape drawing too!
