Glossary



Up and Down are vertical directions. There are four horizontal (parallel to the ground) directions: north, south, east and west. The direction towards the North Pole is north, the direction towards the South Pole is south (Figure 2a). When a person faces north, east is on her right, west is on her left (this is always true, try it!) as shown in Figure 2b.

Draw    Draw the Earth and the people standing at different locations of the Earth. Show the up-down directions for the four people standing on the Earth in the following diagram by using arrows.

You might notice that directions are not absolute, they depend upon the position on the Earth.
