Sahir's father: Take this sack of paddy and put it on the cart, Sahir. Danny, please help Sahir.
Danny: You hold that side, and I’ll hold this side. And we lift on the count of three.
Sahir: One, two, three.
Danny: There, it is on the cart.
Kanasu's Uncle: Yes, the ones here are fresh.
Sahir's father: Now, one of you go and check if we have electricity and switch on the pump.
Danny: Sahir, you go.
Sahir: No, you go. You make me do all your work.
Kanasu's Uncle: Of course!
Sahir's father: Stop fighting, you two. Sahir, you go.
Sahir: Why me?
Sahir's father (loudly) : Make sure the light is on! (Sahir going)
Danny: Don't you think, with the canal being built, our fields could get more water?
Sahir's father: Yes, we might.
Danny: How about growing sugarcane then?
Sahir's father: Danny, you give suggestions, but you don’t do any work.
Danny: I have other things to do. I have decided to join the new youth group in the village. They are going to organise activities around the new health centre.
Sahir's father: What other things? You finished your 12th standard last year. Now you while away your time doing nothing. You should be helping me in the field.
Danny: Father, I wish you would listen to what I want. Don't you think it should be my decision?
Sahir's father: Your decision? You don't even think about asking me for my opinion, do you? You know that I need your help in the field. Sahir does not have time from school. Why should you do something else?
(sound of Sahir coming)
Sahir: Father, I have decided that I'm going to be a geologist.
Danny (laughing): What?!
Sahir's father: Oh, you two day-dreamers!
Sahir: But, Father, today in class, we were asked to share our dreams for the future. And the teacher suggested that if I’m interested in rocks, I should consider studying geology.
Danny: Are you sure that is what you want to do? You are too young to decide. Do you even know what subjects you should be studying to become a geologist, which courses….
Sahir: I know I should be studying Geography…..
Danny: Yes, but what about after the 12th…?
Sahir: Our teacher told us today that a new Science teacher will be joining the school in the new term. He is from the city and could have more information about these things. I shall ask him. You would not know.
Danny: I know everything. I am older than you.
Sahir's father:Stop arguing now, the two of you, and help me finish loading this cart.
Danny & Sahir: Okay! Coming!
Sahir:There, it's done! May I go now ?
Danny: All the sacks are loaded. I want to go too. My friends are waiting.
Sahir's father: I am asking you to think about helping me in the field and all you can do is think about your friends.
Danny: Father, please try to understand. I’ve already told you, I have other plans.
Sahir's Father: Fine! Go! Be with your friends!
(sound of footsteps)
Danny: Sahir, you should help father.
Sahir: You heard what Father said.....I don’t have time after school. I even help Fatima at home. You are the one with time on your hands and so you should be helping out in the field.
Danny: Don’t tell me what to do, little brother. You go on now, Mr. Geologist. Go, get your friends together and prepare to welcome your new Science teacher.
Sahir: That’s a good idea. We might just do that…...
