Summary: Defining Special Quadrilaterals

Lesson Summary

  • Definitions evolve from common properties of classes of shapes.

  • Definitions are needed in order to have a shared understanding of classes of shapes, and be able to reason together about these shape classes.

  • We evolve shared (working) definitions of squares, rectangles, parallelograms and rhombuses to use in class. For example: A square could be defined as a quadrilateral with all sides equal and all angles as right angles. A rhombus could be defined as a quadrilateral with all sides equal.

  • Definitions evolve from common properties of classes of shapes.

(You don’t need to use these definitions - you can evolve your own definitions that you and your class agree upon.)
